Pre-making adornments for the face and body

In this lesson, we talked about how we could pre make adornments for the body or the face to save time on the day of a makeup or body paint.

By doing this, you will not have to individually glue on gems/feathers etc. This also allows for big areas to be covered in a matter of seconds.

To do this you will need:

  • Wig Lace (or cheap netting used to make tutus)
  • Liquid latex
  • Gems or any other adornment of your choice
This was my first time making something like this, and I felt a bit lost as I wasn't creating a piece for a particular look, so it was purely experimental.

To start I taped down the piece of wig lace to the bare table to keep it taut. I just grabbed a few feathers and gems of similar/complementary colours and started arranging them on my small piece on wig lace to see what I could make of it.

Once i had a rough idea of where everything was going, I started to glue them down one by one by dipping the ends of the feathers in the liquid latex. It also helps to run a little but of the latex up the spine of the feather if you want more stability. I then just glued down the gems in a nice pattern that would be suitable to fit on the forehead.

It doesn't glue down securely straight away, so I took my time to avoid things sliding around on the wig lace.

First Attempt!

I was fairly happy with this first attempt as it looks quite pretty, and I really like the colours. I want to design a makeup to go with this piece to see how it comes together.

My second attempt was horrible! I wanted to try to create a piece purely with gems, but was struggling to find a range of colours that compliment each other, so I ended up using gems in the shape of flowers.

I really don't like gems that are shapes of flowers, hearts etc. but I chose them because they had a running colour theme.

Second Attempt

The colours do compliment each other, but it looks too childish. I don't think I will be using shaped gems again! I much prefer the normal round or teardrop shapes, but at least I have experimented with these.
