Materials I have ordered to start making!

I have ordered a few materials to start making a few different things such as a head dress. Even though I don't have a set in stone design, I have a rough idea of colours, materials, and textures that I want in my design.

I have a few different colour gems coming, which I plan to use as an embellishment to the body, head dress and also a potential neck piece I will be making.

The black and the brown gems are very much in relation to the theme of crows and death, but I have also chosen the gold and green colour to brighten it up a little, so it doesn't look too depressing. The green is also inspired by the paint that the Celts painted on to their bodies. I have also purchased this feather fringe for £7.50 (1 Metre) because I could use it in it's current state, or take it apart to have individual feathers. I really liked the colours of the feathers, as they are in keeping with my theme. I did also try to find similar feathers being sold individually, but they all looked quite tacky in comparison.

I'm not too sure what I will being using these faux suede cords for at the moment, but I feel that they could be a nice addition to anything that I do make. I purchased them for a low £2.50 per 5m, so I purchased 5m of the brown and black.

British Museum Visit

Myself and Lorna went to the British Museum in search of inspiration and research into our ideas. I have to say it was very difficult in finding things which were obviously Celtic, because the Celts crossed over with the Romans when they came into Britain, so the style would have changed. (That's my very basic understanding of the Celts and Romans!)

What I did manage to find within the many many rooms of artefacts were very beautiful pieces of jewellery, armour, weapons and farming materials. Some of them I had already seen on the website (and put into my moodboards) but it was so nice seeing them in real life. My favourite thing about Celtic objects is the decoration.

This was one of my favourite pieces. It is a Torc, which is an object worn around the neck. This particular torc is made up of sixty-four threads all twisted together, which were secured by the moulded ends. It is made out of gold mixed with silver, and dates at 75BC. At this time, no other

ancient world civilisation such as the Greeks and Romans could make anything this elaborate, and this is why it has to be my favourite piece.

I find all of these objects so inspiring as they are rich in detail and decoration. I will be taking elements from different objects to create my own patterns, objects and headdress pieces.

Initial Drawings

These are a few drawings based upon some skulls that I have purchased. I have drawn a design for a staff as a prop, a headdress, and a few ideas for things on the body, as I want to cover the front of the body a bit more.

This is only a starting point and my ideas will probably change. I just wanted to get some ideas formulated so designing can begin.

Although the film Hook is about Pirates and in no way relates to my topic, I really like the character Rufio’s high collar made of bamboo. It is very theatrical and striking. All of these films give me inspiration for the design of a Celtic war Goddess.
